Australian Gold Nuggets
There is nothing quite like the discovery of a gold nugget to generate ‘Gold Fever’ among the people. The “Welcome Stranger” is the largest alluvial gold nugget found in the world to date. The nugget, weighing about 72 kgs, was found on February 5th 1869 in Moliagul, Victoria. News of the find spread far and wide and sent prospectors flocking to the area. More recently two nuggets have caught the world’s eye: the Hand of Faith nugget found in 1980 was sold to a Las Vegas casino for $1 million and The Yellow Rose of Texas saw infamous Alan Bond duped $350 000 by a fake.
